Why did I do it? Because she was pulling away from me. Why was she pulling away? Probably because I was going through a depressive episode.

These days, I take expensive mood stabilizers. I don't explode with the slightest provocation and I don't personalize things that shouldn't be personalized.

In short, I'm a completely different person... a happier, better person except that I feel old and unaccomplished instead of green and ambitious.

She was as close as I ever came to a successful state of couplehood and I blew it because I lacked the self-awareness to deal with my own psychosis. When I was in high school, it was inconceivable that someone could have access to volumes of information (not to mention equally important misinformation) paralleling the library of congress in their living room.

And now, people carry that around in their pocket!

It's also facilitating a lot of fundamental change in the middle east. Why now? I don't know. Are we looking at a lot of little Hezbollahs in the making. It seems likely seeing as there is so much hate directed at the west and Israel from predominately Muslim countries.

But, as Snugglypoo might put it, "Most critters believe in good things and freedom and peace are some of the good things there are to believe in."

Fingers crossed.

Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Etc...

To lay people like myself, the situation in the middle east and particularly Egypt is a little hard to grasp. I came across one op-ed that suggested part of the problem America is having with taking a consistent position on the matter is that neither Dems or the GOP have accepted that a surge of support for democracy and freedom is even possible in Egypt. The thinking is that the Muslim brotherhood, while a minority, is too well organized for this to shape up to anything other than a power grab.

Maybe this is correct. We enjoy so many personal and entrepreneurial freedoms in America, we almost take them for granted, but I also think there's a certain tolerance for pluralism and secularism in government which is built into the minds of successful Americans that I don't see as much of in the leadership in the middle east. Perhaps I just read too much CNN.

But I asked a Muslim today what they thought of the situation, and after reluctance to answer, she said it was a scary situation, indicated that she didn't trust the idea of democracy (don't know if she meant there or in general) and that she thought powerful people/governments were playing with the lives of everyday people.

These are all very pat observations, but what struck me was when she said that she believed, as the Koran states, that one day all Muslims would be united as one and the would eventually rise up and (though war or some miracle--she didn't say) establish Islam and the one and only religion. If this is straight out of the Koran I can't say--I only studied the book for two weeks in college so I'm hardly an expert, but it's my guess that this is one of many interpretations just as there are as many ways to interpret the bible as there are interpreters.

Still... I was a little dumbfounded when she said of Christianity and Islam... "One is God... you have to believe that." Perhaps it was a language barrier and she meant "God is one." or "There is only one God". I don't know, but based on the rest of the conversation, I was left thinking here is a person with a deeply ingrained us/them mentality--something I fervently believe is the opposite of everything a country ought to be if it wants to prosper. At this same time, we're talking about a very sweet, caring and wonderful person. Person in the singular so don't think for a minute I think she is representative of all Muslims or even all Muslims from her country.

Just the same... she must have got her religious ethnocentrism from somewhere. Perhaps the Koran, but a lot of intolerance for other religions is encouraged by the bible too... it just comes down to how the thing is taught and interpreted. Are its readers coming at the text from a position of love or fear?

Hell yes... I'd like to see a democratic and free people in Egypt. Most Americans would... not because it somehow strengthens our position in the world, but because for all its flaws, we believe in our democracy and hope other countries can see its advantages too. We have to know it's not a zero sum game. It's been a busy time for us and as far as the strip goes, we're suffering through a spate of writers block. We're probably heading into our last year here before we complete the arc of our story and once we do, it's likely we'll simply stop writing. It's also likely we'll turn to other projects.

I'm heading to NYC in about eleven hours to do some networking in the Children's Book market and if that doesn't prove fruitful, I MAY start a second comic called ACID FOR COURAGE... about film school geeks, life and the life of film school geeks. We'll see what the cards hold creatively and professionally.

In the meantime, enjoy this photostory about how we "illustrate" MH&S. If nothing else comes of our efforts, it would be damn cool if we opened a door for people who can't illustrate well to express themselves in this medium. A living wage is a good thing, but there ain't nothing like a blank canvas. So yes... you are encouraged to freely rip off and improve upon our technique if the spirit moves ya... just don't show us up too bad.

Peace out,
DH

Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving holiday, I'm grateful for the creative freedom that allows us to put together Mr. Huggins and Snugglypoo, warts and all. The first being that the Republicans might be able to disrupt this insane plan to make businesses 1099 everyone with whom they do more than $600 of business. To even propose that sucks.

The second is that DeMint has said he wants to put an end to earmarks. I know, I know, Obama promised the same thing and not only did he fail... considering the size of that bloated stimulus package, I think it's fair to say he didn't even try. It's a shame because much of my initial fondness for the man was predicated on the idea that he would.

I hate earmarks. I know hate is a strong word and must admit I tolerated them in better times, but when people are struggling and their government is setting aside money for a tea kettle museum or whatever non-essential pet project of the wealthy and well-connected they're earmarking in your neck of the woods, it's hard not to feel like there's something wrong with the system.

And the Dems are right to say that Republicans have been hypocritical to both decry earmarks and take them home at the same time. Many of those Republicans have been ousted by their base compliments of the Tea Party movement. Now, there's a lot I find unreasonable about the Tea Party Movement. Socially, they're so far to the right it's almost as though they're either missing out on or denying a certain part of their humanity. But at least, metaphorically, they believe in bringing their own tea kettles.

-DH

Terror Threats

Expressing gratitude to the Saudi Arabians who tipped off officials about explosives en route to Chicago. I can and probably will go back and add some, but this isn't the first time I've run into this problem. In fact, Mr. Huggins (in its defense, the material is decidedly asexual) lacks women too.

As for whether or not the women are strong, it's debatable. Can a woman cry and still be strong? Does she have to have a ripped body and tote a machine gun? God, I Hope Not

Chris Hitchens writes, "The taming and domestication of religious faith is one of the unceasing chores of civilization." On this point, I couldn't agree more.

And while way too much attention has been paid to a small church in Florida, as if these assholes deserve a moment on the world stage, they're a fine example of the kind of faith that needs civilizing. When one faith sets out to attack another faith, they are turning their backs on a basic reality: every faith has it a little bit right, and a little bit wrong. No religion is perfect.

Hitchens goes on to say, "[Islam] is, first, a religion that makes very large claims for itself, purporting to be the last and final word of God and expressing an ambition to become the world's only religion..." I can't say whether this is true of all Muslims, but it holds true for Muslims I know.

This is disturbing because I'd like to defend Islam for its commitment to Compassion and Charity. If facing east in prayer three times a day is important to them, I'd like to see institutions that make allowances for such a thing. But this ridiculous ambition to become the world's only religion makes it a hard sell. Why? Because any religion that can't put its manifestos aside has little legitimate hope of acceptance in a civilized world.

If I have my facts straight, Islam is the second fastest growing religion in the world. The first, thank God, is secularism. I say thank God because secular humanists may hurl insults and get on their high horse, but they don't bomb mosques or fly planes into buildings. They tend to know their religion, like humanity itself, is imperfect.

So, I pray for the domestication of all faiths. I pray for the day Muslims find their footing in Western civilization so they won't feel like they have to go on the defensive every time twenty morons get together to insult them. I pray for a time when people are more tolerant in general, more sophisticated in their manners of thought.

There's a Christian hymn about "The Gift to Be Simple," and I think it's about not getting too caught up in the material trappings of the world, but sometimes it feels as though people take it to mean simple in their worldviews... essentially lazy in their efforts to understand others.

God, I hope not.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://villevillelandfill.blogspot.com/2010/09/holy-wars-god-i-hope-not.html' title='Holy Wars? As I mentioned earlier, I think the fact that he's free to do that is something good about America (and other pluralistic countries).

But the phrase "chose to believe in Jesus" got me thinking. How exactly does one "chose" to believe in something--particularly a miracle?

It seems to me the biggest obstacle to anyone trying to find converts is that if you don't have it hammered into your mind from day one that a man was nailed to a cross, went to hell, came back to life three days later and this was all done as a sacrifice for the sins of every person that's ever lived or ever will live, it's a pretty hard sell.

Burning bushes, water into wine, spiders spinning webs to protect prophets, aliens trapped in volcanos... how do sane people come to take these things as a matter of faith?

Faith. I happen to believe in a God who, through his agents, will answer personal prayers. To some I know this is just as much of a stretch because there's no material proof of it. And that's where faith comes in. So I'm not denigrating faith--just marveling at how far to majority of humanity can stretch it.

G'oo

Someone just asked me why G'oo is a contraction. I got wrapped up in a couple of discussions with intelligent people about this proposal to build a Muslim rec center a few blocks from the trade center site. When I say intelligent, I mean they had reasoned arguments delivered without insult and vitriol unlike many on the internet.

But they both saw the proposal as a slap in the face, and for different reasons I disagreed with them. Person A said, to paraphrase, Muslims were cheering in the streets when the towers fell and none of the Muslim leaders came out against the 9-11 attacks. Well, yes... many Muslims were cheering in the streets. But for a list of Muslim leaders against the attacks, go here.

Person B had a subtler argument, which had more facets to it, but I'll boil it down to the idea that Muslims don't deserve a rec center on such hollowed ground because all they care about is being accepted in this country while they are, hypocritically, not accepting of others. Well here's what I had to say about that. I said that in this country we have a tradition, tenuous though it may be, of believing in freedom of religion and that means freedom to annoy. She thought I was being "funny" or "cute", when I said that but I was quite serious.

I find the way a lot of Muslims practice to be annoying because they espouse that one day we'll all be Muslim. I find the same thing annoying about the way a lot of Christians practice. I find the way Muslims practice to be annoying because they have arbitrary dietary restrictions. But the same can be said for Hindus, Jews. Then there's all the religions out there that believe if you don't think like them, you'll go to hell. Annoying, annoying, annoying.

But for the greater good, whoever you are, I support your right to be annoying because I think that's one of the better things about America.

"Well, I just don't trust them like you do," says person B, but I don't trust "them" and I don't care who "they" are. So, for another example, when the ACLU decides it's persecution against the Jews for Protestants to proselytize in Jewish neighborhoods, they're missing the big picture. This is America... you'd do well to learn to put up with that shit.

-DH

Supermassive Black Hole A*

If you're a sci-fi buff and you haven't done so already, be sure to check out Ben Chamberlain's webcomic, Supermassive Black Hole A*. Psychologist Mark Millard said, "Creative people, like those with psychotic illnesses, tend to see the world differently to most. It's like looking at a shattered mirror."

I personally never experienced a shattered mirror perspective on the world until I got into my thirties. Long story short, crazy shit began to happen, I found the right medication and crazy shit stopped happening. Given the unfair stigma of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or what have you, a shattered mirror is hard enough to live with, let alone publicly admit, but I've always erred in favor of brutal honesty.

And that brings me to this... If I owe my quality of life to a handful of Megacorps in the pharmaceutical industry, is Huggin's money grubbing corporation as bad guy worldview a little hypocritical? I'll let the reader decide, but keep in mind that it's a) Hug's worldview b) a worldview that stands to evolve over time c) in this case, definitely more Aaron's creative vision than mine.

-DH

Drawing Muhammad

I asked my father if he'd heard about this "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" thing on Facebook.

"What's the big deal?" he asked. A little, but in the context of a child-like fantasy, it seemed like harmless wishful thinking about our impact on nature. So I enjoyed the film. If only it really were about Afghanistan... If only the motives of the terrorists harboring Pushtun were as simple and noble as the Na'vi.

Noble Beast

Just listened to Andrew Bird's latest CD, Noble Beast. It sounded like Roy Orbison meets Enigma to me in ways I can't quite pin down (probably because I've never taken any music appreciation courses). The music is absolutely beautiful! Some of the lyrics are a little odd for my taste, but I really connected with "Effigy" which is both reminiscent of and the antithesis of a sixties protest song. Such depth. "When you learn to burn an effigy, it should be of a man who's lost his way." If I could accomplish this look in every strip, I wouldn't worry about it much, but it doesn't always pan out.

Sometimes it turns out like this, where the lawn mower in the foreground muddles every panel it's in. I worked with the image for quite some time and couldn't come up with a good fix. Am I being petty? I can't tell. Friends call the strip 'beautiful' and 'colorful', but those are friends.

All I can say for certain is that as someone with barely passable drawing skills, shooting pictures of clay figures against photographs is the best I can do. And I feel humbled (and a little bit patronized) when people tell me it's good. I honestly wish I could do better.

To me, what really works are the stories. Not every single strip, but the characters and their arcs. In a nutshell, Mr. Huggins needs Snugglypoo to keep from falling into a pit of despair and Snugglypoo needs Mr. Huggins to protect him from his naivete. Of course, even this will evolve in strips to come so stay tuned. I promise... fits of perfectionism and all... it will be worth it.

-DH

Fitz and the Tantrums

If you get a chance you should absolutely check out Fitz and the Tantrums. So at some point the whole anthropomorphism thing breaks down and you have to stop wondering what's on the sandwiches and assume for the sake of the story that no one has resorted to cannibalism.

After I read Fast Food Nation so many years ago, I tried to go veggie myself. And I always feel a little guilty that I didn't pull it off. With my high metabolism, I was often hungry, though I did seriously cut back on meat. At any rate, my main concern was always how much food could be grown on swaths of land used for grazing cattle, so it follows I don't eat much cow.

Hey, there haven't been any cows in the strip so far. Personally I'm very fond of Tres Personajes, but if I'd first laid eyes on it at some struggling artist's exhibit in SoHo, a $400 price tag wouldn't phase me in the least.

-DH

Trusting the Gut

Reading Gut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconscious. It's left me with three impressions which have somewhat altered my world view.

The first is that we have astounding amounts of knowledge about some things and astoundingly little about other things. We have better maps of the surface of Mars than we do our own ocean floors. I was amazed at the manner in which we continually stumble forward into the accepted assumptions of our time, refining them as we go until we can determine something with enough certitude to stop debating it.

A second revelation is that nobody gets away with anything. Not only does Bryson illuminate the foibles of scientists and scholars in their respective laboratories, he provides many details of their social shortcomings; scandalous affairs, petty jealousies, and attempts to steal credit for other's work.

Lastly, one of the major threads Bryson hangs his narrative on is just how unlikely it is that there could ever be a planet like earth suspended in the right balance around the right star with the right moon and the right chemicals sustaining life like us. And yet, as rare a gem as earth is, life is so amenable to its surroundings, and the universe so vast, there could be billions of planets like ours.

-DH

New Andrew Bird

Ordered the new Andrew Bird CD online the other night.
